Why Relationships Matter More Than Anything Else

May 14, 2026

At the end of the day, it is not achievements, possessions, marks, trophies, or status that shape the quality of our lives most deeply — it is our relationships.

Human beings are wired for connection. From the moment we are born, relationships help shape our sense of safety, identity, confidence, and belonging. The way we connect with others influences how we feel about ourselves and the world around us.

Positive relationships help children and adults alike to thrive. They provide encouragement during difficult times, joy during happy moments, and comfort when life feels uncertain. Feeling seen, heard, valued, and accepted by others is one of our deepest emotional needs.

Research consistently shows that strong relationships are one of the greatest protective factors for mental health and wellbeing. People with supportive relationships tend to experience greater happiness, resilience, confidence, and life satisfaction. Healthy relationships can even improve physical health and help us cope more effectively with stress.

For children, relationships are especially important. The connections they develop with parents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, siblings, and friends help shape how they learn to communicate, manage emotions, solve problems, and navigate challenges. Through relationships, children learn empathy, kindness, cooperation, and trust.

At Get GRIT, we believe social and emotional skills are not separate from relationships — they are the foundation of them.

When children learn to:

  • identify and manage their emotions,

  • communicate effectively,

  • resolve conflict respectfully,

  • show empathy,

  • think resiliently,

  • and understand the perspectives of others,

they are building the skills needed for healthy and meaningful relationships throughout life.

Relationships are not always easy. Friendships change. Misunderstandings happen. Conflict occurs. People grow and sometimes grow apart. These experiences can be painful, but they are also part of being human. Learning how to navigate relationships with honesty, kindness, boundaries, and resilience is one of life’s most important lessons.

In a world increasingly focused on performance, comparison, and busyness, it is important to remember what truly matters most.

Children may not remember every worksheet they completed or every mark they received at school, but they will remember how people made them feel. They will remember who listened to them, encouraged them, believed in them, and stood beside them during difficult moments.

  • Relationships are where we experience belonging.
  • Relationships are where we learn empathy.
  • Relationships are where we practise courage, forgiveness, patience, and compassion.
  • Relationships are where life feels meaningful.

At the heart of wellbeing is connection — to ourselves and to others.

Relationships are the most important aspects of our lives.
