π΅Supporting the Heads Up Alliance to Delay Smartphones for Kids
Jul 06, 2025In today’s tech-saturated world, our children are growing up under a digital sky. While technology can be a powerful tool, more and more experts are warning: handing a smartphone to a child is like handing over a loaded gun—it’s powerful, addictive, and dangerous in the wrong hands.
It may sound dramatic, but the evidence is mounting: smartphones are the new smoking—once embraced without question, now linked to a growing list of physical, emotional, and developmental harms.
That’s why we proudly support the Heads Up Alliance, a growing community of parents, educators, and mental health professionals working together to delay smartphones until at least Grade Eight (I still think this is too young) giving children the space to grow up with their heads up—not bent over a screen.
I will be starting up my own Heads Up Alliance at my child's new school next year.
π¦ What Is the Heads Up Alliance?
The Heads Up Alliance unites families who believe childhood should be filled with wonder, creativity, movement, and real connection—not scrolling, likes, comparison, and constant distraction.
By taking the pledge to delay smartphones, families create strength in numbers and a culture of support. Saying “not yet” becomes not just easier—but normal.
π The Laundry List of Serious Harms
Even if we assumed the science wasn’t settled…
Even if we ignored early research and gave Big Tech the benefit of the doubt…
Even if we didn’t apply the precautionary principle to our children’s wellbeing (which we absolutely should)…
Wouldn’t this laundry list of serious harms still justify our urgent action to delay smartphones and reclaim childhood?
-
Less sleep
-
Less reading
-
Less time in nature
-
Less sport and exercise
-
Less family connection
-
Less real-life friendship
-
Less face-to-face socialising and human connection
-
Less concentration and learning
-
Less music, art, hobbies
-
Less downtime and self-reflection
-
Less curiosity, creativity, and wonder
-
Less play
And at the same time:
-
More bullying
-
More exposure to extreme viewpoints
-
More exposure to gratuitous violence
-
More exposure to pornography and sexualised content
-
More exposure to sextortionists
-
More exposure to child predators
This is not alarmism—it’s reality for many families. And the cost of ignoring it is too high.
π€³ Why Delay?
Delaying doesn’t mean rejecting technology altogether—it means giving children time to build the foundations they need to use it wisely and safely. Here’s why it matters:
π§ Mental Health Protection
Smartphones and social media are strongly linked to anxiety, depression, and sleep disruption in teens and tweens. Children are simply not equipped to manage the digital world’s addictive design and emotional toll.
π₯ Real-World Social Skills
Face-to-face interaction builds empathy, communication skills, and confidence. These are learned in conversation, play, and group settings—not in filtered photos or comment sections.
𧩠Protecting Focus and Learning
Constant notifications fracture attention. Children need time to develop focus, imagination, and grit—skills best nurtured offline.
π¨π©π§π¦ You’re Not Alone
The hardest part of saying “not yet” is feeling like the only one. The Heads Up Alliance makes it easier by bringing families together under a shared commitment: to protect childhood, together.
This isn’t about fear—it’s about love, leadership, and logic.

π΅ Consider a basic phone or 'startphone' for kids who need to stay in touch without full access to the internet.
The Heads Up Alliance recommends the Opel Mobile Flip Phone 6 as a safer alternative for children who need to stay in touch without the risks that come with a smartphone.
Unlike traditional smartphones, this device has no web browser, which means:
-
No access to social media platforms, where children are often exposed to unrealistic comparisons, cyberbullying, and addictive scrolling.
-
No risk of stumbling across violent or explicit content, including pornography, which is sadly all too common online.
-
No access to messaging apps or websites where online predators may try to make contact.
-
No group texting, which is a common source of social stress, exclusion, and miscommunication among children and pre-teens.
The Opel Flip Phone offers peace of mind for parents and a healthy boundary for kids—allowing them to call and text trusted contacts without being pulled into the world of the internet too soon.
π± Reclaim Childhood. Delay the Phone.
We only get one chance to raise our children. Let’s not hand over that opportunity to an algorithm. Delaying smartphones gives our kids the gift of time—time to play, wonder, connect, create, and just be kids.
Heads up. Hearts open. Childhood protected.
