Introducing the Get GRIT Program

Raising Kids with GRIT

We all want the same thing for our children. That is for them to be happy.

What does a life of happiness look like?

A life of happiness looks very similar to a life of unhappiness.  Both are filled with challenges, hurdles to conquer, hardships, disappointments and failures.

Happiness is not a life without hurdles or setbacks or challenges.  But rather a life of happiness is a life where we are able to tackle life’s challenges and setbacks with optimism, grit and grow from adversity.

Happiness involves a set of skills, which can be learned, nurtured and strengthened with immediate benefits to our mental health, our learning and our relationships.

These skills are often referred to as our Emotional Intelligence.  Developing a child’s emotional intelligence plays a vital role in raising happy, resilient and well-adjusted kids.  Mastering the essential skills in life lays a strong foundation for learning, relationships and citizenship critical for success in school and beyond.  Emotional intelligence is possibly the most valuable skills you can acquire.

Recommended for children aged 5-8 years (Please register your interest for our 9-12 years program here).

The four elements in the Get GRIT Program will teach your child the most important skills in life.

Getting Along

Children will learn the skills to get along with other people and better understand relationships.  By building positive relationships with others, children will be happier and more fulfilled and feel more supported and connected.

Children will learn how to:

  • Establish and build positive relationships

  • Maintain friendships

  • Work collaboratively

  • Negotiate and resolve conflict

  • Be assertive

Building Resilience

This element involves children learning the skills to persevere in the face of setbacks and frustrations, to be grittier, more positive and optimistic.  Training children to be aware of their internal dialogue and their thinking patterns fosters resilience by helping them to better manage life’s inevitable disappointments.

Children will learn how to:

  • Persevere to overcome frustrations

  • Bounce back from adversities

  • Recognise internal dialogue and positive self-talk

  • Recognise how thoughts influence feelings and behaviour

  • Change negative thoughts to positive thoughts

Identify Emotions

This element involves children developing awareness of their own emotions and others.  Self-awareness, the cornerstone of emotional intelligence, is the ability to recognise emotions and their impact on both yourself and others. Empathy builds on self-awareness and is a fundamental skill essential to successful relationships and interactions.

Children will learn how to:

  • Recognise emotions

  • Regulate and manage emotional responses

  • Recognise personal qualities and achievements

  • Manage anxiety

  • Manage anger

  • Understanding others emotional states and needs (empathy)

Take Responsibility

This element involves teaching children to take responsibility for their learning by developing a mindset of growth, persistence and optimism. Changing the way a child perceives their own abilities and potential can drastically improve their performance. Too often children live in the now rather than the yet and as a result they focus on their limitations rather than their potential.

Children will learn how to:

  • Develop a growth mindset

  • Make positive and responsible decisions

  • Develop self-discipline

  • Set goals

  • Take risks

Disclosure

During the preparation of this work, every effort has been made to provide information using highly credible sources at the time of publication. The program is not designed for children who have severe psychological disorders or medical conditions.  Children who show signs of dangerous behaviour to themselves or others, should be placed under the care of a qualified professional.  Get GRIT is not intended to take the place of professional therapy, counselling or medical treatment.   If a parent has any concerns about their child’s wellbeing, they should seek medical treatment from a qualified professional and not solely rely upon the opinions expressed in the Get GRIT Program.

Why GRIT?

Social and emotional skills, like any other skill, need to be explicitly taught and practiced. Children who are explicitly taught social and emotional skills are more likely to succeed at school, develop healthy relationships and are less likely to develop mental health problems.

Developing a child’s emotional intelligence plays a vital role in raising happy, resilient and well-adjusted kids. Mastering the essential skills in life lays a strong foundation for learning, relationships and citizenship critical for success in school and beyond.  The Get GRIT program aims to develop children’s social, emotional and communication skills for improved relationships and academic outcomes.

Well-being is essential for learning. A child’s ability to self-regulate emotions and successfully manage social interactions is critical to success in school and beyond. Social and emotional skills go hand in hand. The social skills necessary for success inrelationships will be the result of well-developed emotional skills. How a child responds to different feelings and emotions will have a significant impact on how they cope and enjoy school life.

The program promotes resilience in children by providing practical and useful strategies for coping with times of worry and stress. Enrolling in the Get GRIT Program is a great start to ensure your child has the necessary social and emotional skills to effectively navigate school and life and maintain a healthy mind and positive well-being.
